Teaching at Western

Instructors at Western Technical College teach diverse topics and come from equally diverse backgrounds. But, they do have at least two things in common: First, they have actually worked in their areas of expertise and bring real-life experiences and knowledge to their classrooms. Second, they received district certification prior to teaching at Western.

This Web site will give you an overview of the process to becoming certified to teach in the Wisconsin Technical College System. Visit the frequently asked questions section for specific information, or contact Betsy Konter in the Certification Office at 608.789.6253.

Personal Certification Information

Certification is granted by the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS). Requests are submitted after an individual is employed by Western. Western pays the WTCS for initial certification and certification renewal fees. Any verifications and official transcripts, and their associated fees are the responsibility of the employee being certified.

Most instructors are granted Provisional Certification upon employment in the WTCS. The WTCS employs both academic and occupational instructors. Academic instructors must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree with a major in the subject area or 20 credits in the subject area and 2,000 hours of non-educational work experience. Occupational instructors must have a bachelor's degree or equivalent occupational experience and 4,000 hours of work experience in the field they will teach.

Instructors certified at the provisional level are ultimately working toward 5-Year Certification, which can require additional course work in the subject area and the completion of the following seven education courses; (1) Curriculum/Course Construction (2) Philosophy of Vocational, Technical & Adult Education (3) Teaching Methods (4) Educational Psychology (5) Educational Evaluation (6) Guidance and Counseling (7) Educational Diversity.
