Campus Events Committee

The Campus Events Committee is involved in bringing high quality entertainment to campus to ensure that your stay at Western is not only educational but fun! Most events are held in the Kumm Cafeteria and include musical performers, variety acts, comedians, and lecturers. Look for posters around campus throughout the year advertising upcoming events.

Athletics

Varsity teams compete against technical and community colleges throughout Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota. Western varsity athletics include men’s basketball and baseball, and women’s basketball and volleyball.

To be eligible for athletic competition in varsity sports, you must meet the regulations of the National Junior College Athletic Association, be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits, and maintain a grade point average of 1.75 during the first year of competition and 2.0 during the second year.

Home basketball and volleyball games are played at the Holy Cross Seminary (game dates are in the calendar section of this planner). Admission to the games is free with your student ID except for National Junior College Region XIII tournament games.

Professional Organizations and Clubs

Professional organizations and clubs offer you an opportunity for professional development, team interaction, socialization, leadership activities, and school and community relations. Each of the College’s organizations participates in campus activities and may also attend local, state, and national competitions. Meetings are usually held Mondays during open hour. All clubs and organizations have at least two voting members on the Student Government. Sanctioned clubs receive travel and activity grants through the Student Government. All club and organization members are recognized at the annual Student Leadership Night.

Student Government

As a student, you can help make important decisions about campus life by participating in Western’s Student Government. All students may participate in Student Government as members at large or as an elected representative from a student club or organization. Student Government is the official voice of the students at Western and maintains a liaison with organizations and with Western’s administration. Student government sets the budget for allocation of student activity fees and also selects campus events that occur during the year.

The Executive Board, which includes the president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, public relations/historian, and parliamentarian, are elected in the spring for the following school year. Elected in the fall, are members representing each of the College’s professional organizations and the Wisconsin Student Government governor and lieutenant governor.

Student Government meetings are held the first Monday of each month during the open hour, 12:25-1:20 p.m. This is a voting meeting. An open forum meeting is held the third Monday of the month during the open hour, where discussions on current policies and events are discussed to be voted on during the regular first Monday’s meetings. Student Employment Services Office

The primary function of the Student Employment Services (SES) office is to serve as a connection between Western programs, graduates, and business and industry. All students and alumni are eligible to receive a variety of services designed to promote informed career choices and a productive employment search.

SES offers a wide array of services which include the following:

  • Job posting for full-time, part-time, and temporary career opportunities
  • Notification of program-related job opportunities for graduates
  • Group instruction in job seeking skills such as: Cover letters and resume, interviewing techniques, job search strategies
  • On-campus employment interviews
  • Student computer station
  • Access to a career library
  • Career Fairs

TechConnect

Western Student Employment Services Job Lead System, TechConnect, is a link between job opportunities and our students, graduates, and alumni. TechConnect is statewide and used by the 16 Technical Colleges of Wisconsin. Students may view Tech- Connect on any of our campus computers at westerntc.edu (click on Current Students, then Employment Services). For off-campus access to TechConnect, a password is required to view the full-time job opportunities. The criteria for registering for off-campus access is that you must be a student in a diploma or associate’s degree program taking six credits or more. Students in their last semester may register to receive program related job postings by e-mail or U.S. mail. Registered graduates will remain active for one year and/or until program employment is found and must notify Student Employment Services of intentions to continue receiving notices.

The Student Employment Services Office is located on the first floor of C-133. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information, please call the office at 608.785.9440.

ID Card

You will need an identification card to access many of the services available to students, including the library, financial aid, athletic events, computer labs, and the Wellness Center. Students will receive a non-transferable ID card after attending an orientation session. Cards are issued in the K-100. Money can be deposited on your card to pay for food in the cafeteria by going to the Student Development Office (K-100). Whatever food is purchased in the cafeteria will be deducted electronically and students will always know their balance.

Students may also put money on their ID card for using copy machines. The Cashier’s office C-131 will put an amount electronically onto your card. Cafeteria money and copy machine money are two separate accounts and cannot be interchanged.

As of September 1, 2002 any replacement identification card will cost $5.00. If an ID card expires it will be replaced at no charge.

Food Services

College Cafeteria

The TC Café, the College Cafeteria, is located in Kumm Center, Room 102, and is open Mondays-Thursdays from 7 a.m.-7:30 p.m. serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. On Fridays the cafeteria is open from 7 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Nutritious meals, fast food, healthy snacks, plus lots of variety await you. You may deposit money on your ID card (Food Service Debit Card) to pay for charges in the cafeteria. Credit cards may also be used.

The Western Corner Bistro

The Corner Bistro is Western Technical College’s student-run restaurant. Located on the first floor of the Kumm Center opposite of the TC Café, the restaurant is open to the public for lunch on Thursdays throughout the spring semester.

The eatery is run by the second-year Culinary Management and Food Production Specialist students and gives them an opportunity to experience the different aspects of operating a restaurant. The entrees change at the mid-semester point, but typically include a hot sandwich, pork, fish, and chicken option. Desserts are also available.

In addition to the restaurant, the students also take part in running a bakery. Bakery items are sold in the Kumm Center Cafeteria, Thursdays and Fridays during the spring semester.

Food Service Debit Card

Food Service Debit Cards are an easy way to buy food in the TC Café. Students may deposit any amount on their Western Student ID card and simply show the card to the cashier when checking out. Whatever food is purchased will be deducted electronically and students will always know their balances. Another feature of the system is if the card is lost, the cards have a photo and students must show the card to the cashier to use it. You can put money on your card in the Student Development Office, Kumm Center, Room 100, or at the cash register. Parents and/or spouses may also put money on the card.

Refund Policy-Food Service Debit Card

Students with $30 or more on their Food Service Debit Cards, who withdraw from the college or move to another campus, may request a refund. The balance, minus a $20 service charge, will be refunded. Students with less than $30 on their cards will not receive a refund. Food Service Refund Forms may be picked up in the Coleman Center, Room 308, completed and presented to the Food Service Director, in the Cafeteria, who will process the form.

Student Housing Office

Western has a 99-bed residence hall which provides housing for both men and women. Western Residence Hall is located at 6th and Vine Streets. The Housing Office also maintains a list of off-campus housing. This list is available online to students through the Western Technical College website. Many of the rentals listed with this office are not listed elsewhere. The Housing Office is located in Room 100 of the Kumm Center, 608.785.9445.
