Western Forms a Community Partnership with YES AmeriCorps
Inspired by President Lee Rasch’s signing of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment to reduce the College’s carbon footprint, Western is taking steps to provide instruction and leadership in the growing Green Movement.
To help ensure that Western continues to meet the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations, the College has filled two new full-time positions that specialize in sustainability—an Associate Dean of Sustainability & an Environmental Administrative Assistant/Energy Education Specialist. In addition, student and staff committees have been formed to focus on several areas of sustainability such as recycling, energy, and local foods.
Green Pledge Raffle
The new year brought with it a new promise to green decision making on a personal level at Western. Western Commercial Art Instructor, Ken Hey, along with members of Western’s Recycling Committee introduced the idea of staff making a Green Pledge. Hey developed and designed the Pledge and along with the Recycling Committee rolled out the concept to Western staff during the January College Day.
The Green Pledge promotes that being green can be as simple as making four daily choices. The card lists 10 simple choices that staff can choose from and commit to doing at work. It only asks that individuals choose four areas to focus on.
