Healthy Eating

Institutions can build a sustainable food system.
Modern industrial food production often has environmental impacts. Pesticides and fertilizers used in agriculture can contaminate ground and surface water, which has potentially dangerous impacts on wildlife and human health.

Long-distance transportation of food to institutions produces greenhouse gas emissions and other pollution.

Farm workers are often paid low wages, subjected to harsh working conditions, and exposed to pesticides.

Institutions can use their food purchases to support their local economies; encourage safe, environmentally-friendly farming methods; and help alleviate poverty for farmers.

Please note that dining services take an important role in healthier eating AND can also be major factors in conserving energy and water, reducing waste, and purchasing environmentally preferable materials other than food.

Western's new Food Court plans to offer you several ways to eat healthy & support a greener local community.
