Western Student Grievance Form

When a student believes he/she has a concern with a member of the staff at Western (staff meaning any person employed by the district), the following procedure should be followed:

STEP 1

Within five weekdays of the date on which the concern occurred, the student is ENCOURAGED to meet with the staff member and discuss the concern. It is hoped that most concerns can be resolved within this step. If the staff member and the student are not able to resolve the concern OR if the student feels uncomfortable meeting with the staff member, the student can proceed to Step 2, and the grievance form below should be completed.

STEP 2

The student may request a meeting of the immediate supervisor (Student Development Office will assist in identifying supervisors name) in a timely fashion to discuss the concerns relating to the staff member. If the student feels the concern is unresolved at this step, he/she may proceed to Step 3.

STEP 3

The student may (no later than five weekdays after the meeting in Step 2) request that the immediate supervisor of the staff member arrange a meeting with the student and the staff member involved to discuss the concern. If the student feels the concern is unresolved at this step, he/she may proceed to Step 4.

STEP 4

The student may submit an appeal in writing to the appropriate unit administrator (or designee). A form for this purpose may be accessed in the Student Development office (Kumm Center, room 100). The Student Development office will assist the student in selecting the appropriate unit administrator (or designee).

The appropriate unit administrator (or designee) will arrange a meeting of the staff member, immediate supervisor, and the student for the purpose of reviewing the actions to date and attempt to resolve the problem. The resolution and/or decision by the unit administrator will be conveyed in writing to the student within two days of such meeting.

STEP 5

Should the decision of the appropriate administrator in Step 4 be unsatisfactory to the student, he/she can appeal to the president of the College. The president will review the concern and the actions to date. The president has the option of setting a meeting with the appropriate parties to attempt further discussion or accept the decision of the administrator in Step 4. In either case, the President's Office shall notify the student in writing of his/her action.

STEP 6

Should the decision of the president be unsatisfactory to the student, he/she can appeal to the Western District Board.
