Soft Spots: A Marine’s Memoir of Combat and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Clint Van Winkle
Van Winkle’s account of his two years of duty as a Marine sergeant in Iraq is bitingly honest. He emphasizes that every Marine’s desire is not to spread freedom but rather to come home alive. Van Winkle describes some firefights but also times he and his comrades blaze away at vehicles or distant figures only to discover they had killed civilians. After discharge, memories and rage drove him to seek help from an unhelpful VA, but a few sympathetic therapists and his loving wife set him right.
