Krista Durnin, of La Crosse, has been selected as the 2014-15 Western Technical College Student Ambassador, an official spokesperson for Western and the Wisconsin Technical College System.

As Student Ambassador, Durnin will have opportunities to speak to potential students, community leaders, community groups, and others, and will spotlight the important role of technical and occupational education to the economy and society. In addition, she will represent Western at the state level by working with other student ambassadors throughout the WTCS.

Durnin is a second-year Associate of Science – Administrative Professional degree student, who is involved in several extracurricular activities on campus. She is currently a classroom tutor in Written Communication where she helps students who are both struggling and succeeding to reach their goals. She also works in the Business Office on campus as a work study. In addition, Durnin takes advantage of any opportunity she has to participate on a student panel.

“Krista is a highly motivated young lady,” said Gail Fancher, instructor for Business Technology who nominated Durnin for the honor. “She believes with her education and experiences she will better her life and her son’s life.”

Durnin spent six years working in the hair and beauty industry and chose Western Technical College to change her career. “There were many reasons why I chose to attend a technical college versus a four-year institution. The most prominent reasons being the time it would take me to complete my program and the cost.”

“My role as a classroom tutor will translate very easily to being student ambassador. Both positions require me to motivate and encourage students and remind them of what they are working toward,” added Durnin.
