When Lynda Smith realized that some of her fellow students at Western Technical College had to go without food or meals, she decided to do something about it. She started asking questions and gaining support for her cause. Now, the college has a dedicated space called the Cavalier Cupboard, and Smith is hoping the community will help stock the empty shelves.

“We are partnering with the Hunger Task Force to get some supplies,” said Smith, a Culinary Management graduate and current Business Management student. “But we are also hoping that our students and community members will donate items as well.”

A kick-off food drive will be held Thursday, March 13, from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. in the Kumm Center Union Market. A drive-up spot will also be available by the 7th Street bus stop near the Kumm Center. The public is encouraged to bring non-perishable food items. Monetary donations will also be accepted.

The Cavalier Cupboard will be open to Western students with a valid ID starting Tuesday, March 18. Hours will be Tuesdays and Fridays, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Students will be allowed to visit once per week and will be given 1-2 bags of food (enough for 3-4 meals) per visit. Availability of items will be dependent on inventory and donations.

Volunteers will staff the pantry, and it will be organized through Western’s Community Engagement Office.

“This is a great program, and I’m so glad Lynda got the ball rolling,” said Kari Reyburn, Western’s Community Engagement Coordinator. “It’s hard to be successful in college if you are hungry. If we can eliminate even one stressor in our students’ lives, that could be the key to their being successful at Western.”
