Katie Mulera - Electronic and Computer Engineering Technology
When Katie Mulera was young, she loved taking things apart and reassembling them. She wanted to know how they worked! Fast forward 15 years, and she's still the same. Only now, she's disassembling and reassembling in order to earn her degree in the Electronic and Computer Engineering Technology program.
Katie is one of few females in her program and her profession. But her gender never factored into her decision to pursue an ECET degree. What she liked was the potential for a good salary and doing something she loved. The program allows her to combine her love of computers and math. And her commitment, or stubbornness, as she says, propels her to do well in the program. And when she graduates, the opportunity to earn a great living is there for her.
What would she change? The amount of math she took in high school. She wishes she'd had more. She had a foundation in pre-calculus advanced placement statistics. She scored high on her math ACTs, allowing her to step right into her program.
Katie is making the most of her academic experience. She has received several scholarships, including the National Science Foundation scholarship. Katie serves as the president of the Electronics Club and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa. When she graduates from Western, she will transfer to UW-La Crosse to earn a bachelor's degree. Then, it'll be on to a career that makes the most of her talents
