That man, a Mr. Low, then operated the La Crosse Business School and later taught at the Coleman Vocational School, now WWTC. Kramer, who had only an eighth grade education, became acquainted with Low because he was a regular passenger on his streetcar. "He wanted to know why I didn't attend college and become something different than a street car conductor," Kramer said. With Mr. Low's encouragement, Kramer attended Mr. Low's business school, and became a bookkeeper, while working on the city's streetcar. He served as La Crosse City Clerk and Controller for many of his 24 years with the city. In 1951 he was elected secretary-treasurer of First Federal Savings Bank, where he later was president and chairman prior to his retirement. Kramer always wanted to give the same encouragement he received to others. He has endowed what he called "a small scholarship fund for those interested in furthering their education." "I'm trying to see that someone who needs a little help succeeds in getting an education that they probably wouldn't get some other place," he said. Fred died November 26, 1994, at the age of 98.

La Crosse Dental/G. Johnson Endowed Scholarship
Scholarship Criteria
About This Scholarship
Dr. Johnson graduated from the University of Indiana dental school in 1966. He served for three years as a dentist in the Navy before setting up his practice in La Crosse. He enjoyed his work and his patients; they called him "Gentle Gene". He inspired two sons to follow him into the dental profession. Dr. Johnson cooperated with the dental assisting program at Western for many years. Students who needed an understanding and kind environment to gain confidence in themselves were sent to his office for their clinical experience. Under his guidance they gained experience and skill in their chosen profession. Dr. Johnson's untimely death left a void in the dental community felt by all who knew him. The La Crosse Dental Association raised the money to fund this scholarship in his name. The scholarship is given each year to a student who demonstrates some of his ideals and characteristics. Being an "A" student is not the main criteria for this scholarship. A person, who is a team worker, is kind and giving to classmates, and someone who reaches out to help others is the type of person to receive this annual award.

Dave appreciated the struggles many students had to endure while attending school. and excelling at their studies. He gave them encouragement, helped them with their resumes and just listened to them. He felt that this was just as important as anything he could teach them in the classroom. Besides his kindness and caring, Dave's former students remember his wonderful sense of humor. It helped make learning enjoyable and not just a chore. Because of his enjoyment of and concern for his students, and because he would want to go on giving what he could to them, Dave's family, friends, coworkers, and former students have endowed this scholarship so he can perpetually give to his students.

Today the organization continues its education and advocacy mission on behalf of the state's largest fruit crop. Because of its mission, the WSCGA strongly supports education at all levels including post secondary programs such as those provided through technical colleges in the state. Since 1991, the association has endowed scholarship funds for students at UW Madison, UW Stevens Point, and those attending Wisconsin's Technical Colleges. Funds for the endowments are raised through an annual golf outing and sporting clay shoot. In 1997 and 1998 all proceeds from the two events were used to establish and enhance the fund at the WWTC Foundation. The scholarships are awarded to students studying in an area related to cranberry production. The objective of the scholarship is to develop trained individuals who may seek a successful career in a field related to cranberry production.
