LA CROSSE, Wis., Jan. 17, 2017 - Twenty-five students completed child care credentials through Western Technical College, thanks to an Early Learning Challenge Grant from the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families.
The $231,000 grant was allocated to provide credit courses for child care providers who are looking to improve their ratings with YoungStar, Wisconsin’s child care quality rating and improvement system.
“Research shows that the education level of the child care provider is a primary determinant in child care quality,” said Pat Chilsen, grant coordinator. “The providers benefit from the additional education, but the real beneficiaries of this grant are the children who will be receiving a higher quality of care.”
The funding covered tuition, books, supplies, coaching/mentoring, professional development sessions, and credential commission fees for three credentials: Family Child Care, Infant Toddler Care, and Preschool Credential.
Each student completed a portfolio and submitted it for review by a credential commissioner. The final step was to present a portion of the portfolio to their peers, instructors, and a Wisconsin Registry Credential staff person during a Commission Ceremony on Jan. 7.
