Western Receives STARS Silver Rating For Sustainability Achievements

STARS Silver Rating

LA CROSSE, Wis., May 26, 2021 - Western Technical College has earned a STARS Silver rating in recognition of its sustainability achievements from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).

STARS, the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System measures and encourages sustainability in all aspects of higher education. Participants report achievements in five overall areas: academics, engagement, operations, planning and administration, and innovation and leadership.

“STARS was developed by the campus sustainability community to provide high standards for recognizing campus sustainability efforts,” said AASHE Executive Director Meghan Fay Zahniser. “Western Technical College has demonstrated a substantial commitment to sustainability by achieving a STARS Silver Rating and is to be congratulated for their efforts.”

Western has achieved national recognition for its sustainability efforts, including a Green Ribbon School designation by the U.S. Department of Education, the national Climate Leadership Award from Second Nature, and a Tree Campus, U.S.A. designation since 2011.

“In 2021, it shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone that the world is out of balance. There are a lot of pressing problems from poverty and inequity within our communities to the health of our ecosystem,” said Casey Meehan, director of Sustainability and Resilience at Western. “Our sustainability work at Western is not about just doing ‘less bad.’ It’s about rethinking how we do things so that people – and our communities – thrive.”

Western’s STARS report is publicly available on the STARS website: https://reports.aashe.org/institutions/western-technical-college-wi/report/2020-12-22/.
