LA CROSSE, Wis., Nov. 29, 2016 – Western Technical College has been named to the 2017 list of Military-Friendly Schools by Victory Media. The list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans, and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus
Victory Media, a media entity for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, reviewed more than 10,000 schools nationwide for its annual list. The organization selected 1,868 schools that best support student veterans and offer them additional benefits, such as an on-campus veteran’s program, credit for service, and military spouse programs.
According to Daniel Nichols, a Navy Reserve veteran and Chief Product Officer at Victory Media, “Our ability to apply a clear, consistent standard to the majority of colleges gives veterans a comprehensive view of which schools are striving to provide the best opportunities and conditions for our nation’s student veterans. Military Friendly® helps military families make the best use of the Post-9/11 GI Bill and other federal benefits while allowing us to further our goal of assisting them in finding success in their chosen career fields.”
Western has been ranked in the top 20 percent since the survey’s conception eight years ago. Western is expected to serve over 1,200 veterans and their dependents this academic year.
“Western is committed to the student veteran population,” said Jackie Helgeson, Veterans Service Manager at Western. “We want to ensure all have a path to success that includes on-campus support, recognition of their service and experience, and transition services that help them adjust to college life. “
The 2017 list of Military Friendly Schools® was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 10,000 schools nationwide approved for VA tuition funding. The survey results that comprise the list were independently tested by Ernst & Young LLP, based upon the weightings and methodology established by Victory Media. Each year schools taking the survey are held to a higher standard than the previous year via improved methodology, criteria and weightings developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Board (AAB) consisting of educators from schools across the country.
