Western's Viroqua Campus Receives LEED Gold Certification

Viroqua Regional Learning Location

VIROQUA, Wis., May 24, 2018 – Western Technical College’s Viroqua regional location achieved Gold certification from Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

The building project, which was completed in 2016, highlights wide-ranging energy efficient building systems, extensive construction activity pollution protection, and promotes alternative transportation for low emission vehicles. The plan includes a purchasing agreement that will have 100 percent of Viroqua’s energy use produced by renewable energy for the next two years.

Western’s efforts in all of its LEED facilities has led to a total cost avoidance of over $2 million.

“The LEED certification is another measure of the financial benefits of pursuing sustainability,” said Genevieve Mortensen, sustainability assistant at Western.

Key partners to the project include Johnson Controls, Inc., Market & Johnson Construction, HSR Associates, Strategic Solution Engineering, Nexus Solutions, RDG Planning and Design, Wunderlich-Malec, Garland Commercial Roofing, and Kraus Anderson.

Western’s Lunda Center, Kumm Center Student Union and Campus Shop, and Black River Falls Regional Location are LEED Silver certified. Western’s Sparta Public Safety Training Center and the Truck and Heavy Equipment Facility addition are LEED Gold certified.
