National Standardized Exams

National standardized exams are written by professional testing companies or private universities and are administered in licensed testing sites. Currently, Western accepts:

CLEP Exams

CLEP exams are standardized tests created and administered by an outside testing agency, CollegeBoard. The exams are administered by licensed testing sites throughout the nation with the closest site to the La Crosse campus being the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.   • A passing score of 50 is needed to be granted credit at Western Technical College. If you have not achieved a satisfactory score on any CLEP exam you can retake the same exam title after a six-month waiting period. CLEP exams are graded as pass/fail. If you successfully pass, the grade of “CR” (credit) is shown on your transcript and is not used to calculate the GPA.
  • The non-refundable fee for each exam is $90, free for active military personnel. Service members will have to personally fund a retest, if applicable.
  • Each exam takes approximately 90-120 minutes to complete.
  • CLEP exams can be taken anytime throughout the year.

  • For exam details, study guides, sample questions and practice tests. You register, make arrangements with the test site, and pay directly through the CollegeBoard website. Request that test results be sent to Western Technical College.

DSST Exams

DSST exams are standardized tests created and administered by an outside testing agency, Prometric. The exams are administered by licensed testing sites throughout the nation with the closest site to the La Crosse campus being the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.   • A passing score of 400 is needed to be granted credit at Western Technical College. If you have not achieved a satisfactory score on any DSST exam, you can retake the same exam title after a 90-day waiting period. DSST exams are graded as pass/fail. If you successfully pass, the grade of “CR” (credit) is shown on your transcript and is not used to calculate the GPA.

Advanced Placement (AP) Exams

AP courses are administered through local high schools, and the exams are created by an outside testing agency, CollegeBoard. AP exams are the final step you take after successful completion of an AP course. If your school offers AP courses, contact your AP coordinator to register for the exam(s).   • A passing score of 3 or better is needed to be granted credit at Western Technical College. AP Exams are graded as pass/fail. If you successfully pass, the grade of “CR” (credit) is shown on your transcript and is not used to calculate the GPA.
  • The non-refundable fee for each exam is $95.
  • Each exam takes approximately 2-3 hours to complete.
