Western Marketing Program Student Project to Help Charity

LA CROSSE, Wis. – As part of a service-learning project, students in Western Technical College’s Marketing Management course have been working with Courtesy Corporation (owner of over 38 McDonald’s restaurants in Western Wisconsin, Southeastern Minnesota, and Decorah, Iowa) to create awareness for the Ronald McDonald House Charities Cookies for Kids campaign. The students are using marketing concepts to solve marketing problems, develop marketing strategies, and recognize marketing opportunities, while helping this local business.
Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Cookies for Kids campaigns gives all the profits back to the organization. When you buy the cookies at your local McDonald’s, the proceeds go back to the local chapter in Western Wisconsin and Southeastern Minnesota.
One of these families that have needed the Ronald McDonald House is the Grokowskys, of Holmen, Wis. Their five-year-old son Jake was born with multiple heart defects requiring emergency surgery at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, and they had no idea where they would stay during his hospitalization. Fortunately, the Ronald McDonald House in Rochester had a space. The Rochester house has a budget of over $1 million dollars per year, almost all of which is funded through charitable donations. Families come from all over the country, as well as many, like the Grokowskys, from right here in the La Crosse area.
As part of their project, Western students have planned an event with the La Crosse Spartans and the Grokowskys. At the Friday, April 30, Spartans game, Jake Grokowsky will walk onto the field with Head Coach Gilbert Brown and will be present for the coin toss. In addition, three Western students will be distributing communication pieces promoting the cookie campaign and also highlighting the Grokowsky family. One student will be dressed in a cookie monster outfit as part of the promotion.
