Western nursing staff members Patricia Adams and Sally Davis recently received national recognition for the use of video demonstrations with their nursing students. The practice was submitted to The Sloan Consortium, which recognizes outstanding work in the field of online education, and was awarded with one of nine 2010 Sloan-C Effective Practice Awards.

The submission, titled “Bringing the Demo Home,” was judged on six categories: accessibility, student satisfaction, faculty satisfaction, learning effectiveness, scalability, and cost effectiveness.

The summary form states, “Nursing skills courses have traditionally been delivered in a classroom with live demonstrations of the skills followed by practice in the laboratory. Increased student enrollment and limited laboratory space limits student practice or review of skills outside of class time. Western Technical College's Advanced Nursing Skills course provides web-based video demonstrations of nursing skills, made available through course links within the Learning Management System (LMS), so that students can preview, practice, or review skills from the convenience of home or anywhere there is a broadband connection.”

Sixteen videos have been produced for the Advanced Nursing Skills course and 19 have been produced for the Basic Nursing Skills course. A requirement for approximately 100 students in the Advanced Nursing Skills course each year is to preview a video prior to class each week.

“Another interesting situation where these videos showed value was a student that had been deployed to Iraq just after he finished his first year of Nursing school,” said Adams. “He called us to see if he could review his skills and we were able to help him by making a DVD of the skills videos to send home with him, since he no longer had access to the LMS. It was all he needed to feel comfortable looking for a job as an LPN after he returned home. It's been a worthwhile project and we’re happy to have it recognized nationally.”

The award was presented at the Sloan Consortium Emerging Technologies Conference in San Jose, Calif. On July 21.
