Ag students win awards at state conference

Agribusiness and Landscape Horticulture students from Western Technical College recently received several top honors at the 2012 National Postsecondary Agricultural Student (PAS) Organization Conference in Des Moines. The participating students are members of the college’s PAS Club.
Thirteen Western students attended the conference and participated in competitive events, which involved meeting with business and industry leaders in agribusiness to evaluate their employment skills and industry knowledge through interviews, tests, and case studies. Top finishers included:
Amy Treu, from La Crosse, received first place in Landscape Horticulture Team and third place in Individual Landscape Horticulture.
Patrick Tegen, from La Crosse, teamed up with Treu for first place in Landscape Horticulture Team. He also took first place in Individual Landscape Horticulture and first in the Employment Interview.
Kelsey Stocks, from Durand, Wis. and Emma Shelby, from La Crosse, placed third in the Landscape Horticulture Team competition.
Andrew Tucker, from Fountain City, Wis., took first place in Crop Specialist Team, along with team members Winston Athey, of West Concord, Minn., and Brandon Hellenbrand, of Waunakee, Wis. Athey also took second in Career Planning-Plant Systems, and Tucker took first in Crop Specialist Individual, and second in Career Progress.
Tucker was also selected to serve as a National PAS Vice President for 2012-12. This is the first Western student chosen as a national officer in 10 years.
