Rural Opportunities Foundation, Ltd. recently announced that four Western Wisconsin Technical College students are recipients of the $500 Rural Opportunities Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to students who are, or have been, a member of a family operating a “Wisconsin family farm,” or live in a rural Wisconsin area and demonstrate leadership ability. Eligible programs of study include Dairy Herdsman, Agribusiness, Nursing, and Agriculture.
The honored recipients of this award are Andrea Christensen of Arkdale, Wis. in the Associate Degree Nursing program; Angela Hornby of Genoa, Wis. in the Licensed Practical Nursing program; and Carol West of West Salem, Wis. and Dan Follendorf of Sparta, Wis. in the Agribusiness program.
The Rural Opportunities Scholarship will “help pay for my tuition and expenses,” said Dan Follendorf. “This scholarship, along with others I have been awarded, have paid for about half of my tuition.”
Follendorf was raised in rural Sparta where he helped to raise dairy and beef cattle as well as crops on his family farm. WWTC has prepared Follendorf for his future by giving him an overview of the whole agriculture industry and different careers that will be available to him.
“WWTC has given me more knowledge of field crops and how they grow,” Follendorf said. With this knowledge, Follendorf is prepared for his internship with Cal/West in West Salem, Wis. where his duties will include crossbreeding of seeds for testing of resistance, taking sample weights, and the harvesting of seeds.
