Farm planning workshop to be held March 15

A workshop on Farm Transition, Retirement, and Estate Planning will be held on Thursday, Mar. 15 at Western Technical College, from 10:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. The event will be held at four different campuses: Black River Falls, Independence, Tomah, and Viroqua and will be broadcast on each campus via Interactive TV. It is co-sponsored by a USDA Dairy Revitalization Grant, Western Technical College, and the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection Farm Center.
Speakers at the various campuses will include: Russell Hanson and Kevin Conway, attorneys at law with the Conway Law Office in Westby, who will speak on tax issues relating to farm transfer, estate planning, trusts, sale of the farm, and additional tax issues relating to farm transition. Daniel Arndt, attorney at law, with the firm of Arndt, Buswell and Thorn, S.C., Sparta, will speak on the legal aspects of family farm transfer, setting up an LLC, wills, trusts, probate, and other legal issues. Financial and Retirement Planning will be addressed by Stacy J. Brueggen, financial professional with Anderson Financial, Black River Falls. She will explain what a financial planner is and how to look for and select one. Other speakers on the agenda are two Farm Business and Production Management Instructors at Western Technical College: Dennis Deitelhoff will speak about getting started and building up equity, and Daniel Gilbertson will address the importance of family communication as an initial step in farm transition.
