Veteran Assistance at Western

Western Technical College is approved by the Wisconsin State Approving Agency and the Federal Department of Veterans Affairs to provide training to veterans, active service members, survivors and dependents of a deceased or disabled veteran. You can get more information about VA education benefits from Western's Veteran service office located in the Academic Resource Center R202 or by contacting your local county Veterans Service Officer. http://www.wicvso.org/your_cvso.htm If you are Planning to use veterans educational benefits at Western please follow these steps:

  1. Set up an initial consultation about benefits and enrollment processes and transfer credit with Western Veteran Services by calling 608.785.9436.
  2. Bring with you all military documents you have, i.e. certificate of eligibility, DD214s, NOBE, KICKER as applicable to you. If you are a dependent some benefits will need other documentation please contact us for more information.
  3. After you enroll in classes everyone must fill out the Certification Request Form.
  4. All Veterans must supply the college with their military transcripts.
  5. It is strongly advised to apply for Federal Financial Aid along with your Federal VA benefits for more information on that process see Western's Financial Aid website.

How Much Aid Can I Get?

If you are planning to use a Veteran Benefit you can get a Shopping Sheet that will give you an estimate of aid you may receive if you attend Western. This is only an estimate and only for those using VA benefits. You will need to fill out the FAFSA, an application for free financial aid, in order to get a true FAFSA award.

Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges Consortium Member

Western Technical College is a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) Consortium. SOC, established in 1972, consists of national higher education associations and approximately 1,900 institutional members. SOC Consortium institutional members subscribe to principles and criteria to ensure that quality academic programs are available to military students including those on active duty, Coast Guard Personnel, reservists, members of the National Guard, family members, civilian employees of the Department of Defense, and veterans of all Services. As a SOC Consortium member, this institution ensures servicemembers and their family members share in appropriately accredited postsecondary educational opportunities available to other citizens. Flexibility of programs and procedures particularly in admissions, counseling, credit transfer, course articulations, recognition of non-traditional learning experiences, scheduling, course format, and residency requirements are provided to enhance access of military students and their family members to higher education programs.

W.A.V.E- Web Automated Verification of Enrollment

All veterans using chapter 30, 1607 and active soldiers using 1606 have to verify enrollment on the last day of every month they are enrolled and attending in order to get paid. The monthly student verification can be done by calling the St. Louis number (1.877.823.2378) or by the wave verification.
