The Medical Assistant program prepares individuals to assist physicians in their offices or other medical settings. Medical Assistants perform a wide range of duties. The Medical Assistant is responsible for medical and surgical asepsis, taking vital signs, assisting the physician with examinations and surgery, administering ECGs and administering medications. The business/administrative duties include patient reception, appointment making, recordkeeping, filing, bookkeeping, insurance handling, typing medical correspondence and transcription, and microcomputer applications. Laboratory functions include specimen collection, performance of basic laboratory tests and microscopic work. Graduates find jobs as medical assistants, secretaries, medical laboratory assistants, phlebotomists, receptionists, medical insurance clerks and electrocardiogram technicians. Graduates are eligible to take the national examination to receive certification as a Medical Assistant. Western's Medical Assistant Program CMA (AAMA) Certification Examination 2 Year Statistics
Students who graduate from a Medical Assistant Program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB) are eligible to take the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) Certification examination. Certification is required and/or preferred by most healthcare employers who hire Medical Assistants. The CMA (AAMA) is considered the gold standard of medical assisting professionalism. The credential represents a medical assistant who has been certified by the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). The CMA (AAMA) means a professional edge, increased prestige among colleagues, and greater job security.
