Prepare for a University Transfer

We’ve compiled a list of questions you might want to think about prior to meeting with your Western advisor, the Transfer Coordinator, and/or the four-year institution. After reviewing this list, you should be well-prepared to ask the right questions and receive the answers you need.

After you’ve carefully considered these questions, take a look at our transfer agreements with four-year partner colleges. Once you've narrowed down your schools of choice, follow the steps below to begin the process.

Steps for Transferring to a Four-Year College

Identify the institution(s)/program you're transferring to

Your first step is to identify what four-year institution or program you are interested in transferring to. This will help determine the discussions you will have with your Western advisor and/or the Transfer and Articulation Coordinator.

If you are still unsure, that’s okay too! You can browse your options with your Western advisor and/or the Transfer & Articulation Coordinator.

Contact your College Advisor or the Transfer & Articulation Coordinator at Western

Once you have identified your college/program of interest, please contact your Western College Advisor and/or the Transfer & Articulation Coordinator. We are happy to walk you through your transfer options and talk through various schools.

After speaking with your Advisor and/or the Transfer & Articulation Coordinator, and deciding which college(s) you’d like to attend, we will review your unofficial transcript in order to get an idea of which of, and how, your credits will transfer. We can even explore with you which additional classes you might want to take during your remaining time at Western for additional transfer credits.

Meet with your transfer college/university

We will connect you to the four-year transfer staff at your preferred institution(s). You can communicate with them via phone, email, or in-person to discuss the classes you’ll have to take after transferring and your transfer credits. This is also your chance to talk about any additional educational options that may be available within your program, such as adding on a minor or emphasis in a certain area within your chosen field of study. You can also obtain information on scholarships, tuition, and other questions regarding their institution to ensure this is the best fit for you and your goals.

Reminder: Colleges and universities can change their transfer information from time to time. It is important that once you have decided on a transfer institution, you connect with them and find out the latest on any admission or program changes.

Submit your application to your preferred school and request Western transcript

Your final step is to apply to your four-year school of choice. After you apply and/or have been admitted, you’ll receive a formal credit evaluation showing which of your Western credits will transfer. Transfer institutions are the final decision maker on what will transfer in. The transfer institution will decide their own admission process and standards. It is important to be in close contact with the admissions office of the institution to which you plan to transfer, so that you know how to complete application materials before deadlines.
