At Western, we’re working to make education more affordable and accessible by expanding the use of Open Educational Resources (OER). Led by the Library, our OER efforts have saved Western students thousands of dollars each term.

What Are OER?

Open Educational Resources are teaching and learning materials that are freely available online for anyone to use, adapt, and share. They can include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials, or techniques used to support access to knowledge.

Why OER Matter

• Save Money: OER eliminate or reduce the need to buy expensive traditional textbooks
• Flexible Formats: Digital content is available 24/7 and may be printed at cost
• Inclusive Learning: All students have the same access to course materials from day one
• Ongoing Access: Retain materials even after the class ends
• Personalized and Up-to-Date: Instructors can adapt OER to better fit students’ learning needs and their course content
